Museum Facts

  • In 2016, The Children’s Museum of the Upstate served over 210,000 people: 153,000 visitors and 57,000 through outreach.
  • In 2016, the museum served visitors from all 50 states and over 5 different  foreign countries countries.
  • The museum features 80,000 square feet with 3 floors housing 19 interactive exhibits.
  • In 2014, TCMU was the first children’s museum to be named a Smithsonian Affiliate.
  • Since opening our doors to the public in July of 2009, the total economic impact of TCMU on South Carolina is $75,316,643.
  • More than 15,000 school children from 26 counties across Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina attended the museum with their classrooms in 2016.
  • Seventy middle school students currently volunteer at the museum as participants in our Michelin YES! Program.
  • 690,000 students, teachers, and chaperones have visited TCMU since 2009.
  • The Upstate Play Partners (UPP) program partnered with 40 Upstate Nonprofits granting free admission to families in at-risk communities who may not otherwise have access to TCMU’s exhibits and programs.
  • Over 1,300 free tickets were distributed in 2016 through UPP (formally known as Fund-A-Family).
  • Our volunteers combined logged over 4,585 hours in 2016.
